LA ROUTE DU RHUM (assistance)
This regatta binds St Malo (Britanny, France) to Point-à-Pître (Guadeloupe, Caribbean) since 1978. It generally departs on the last week of October and arrives at its destination on the week before the last of November. The role of the Açores is but of assistance, varying the number of boats in our ports according to the problems and/or necessities that come across to them. This regatta happens every 4 years. Monohulls and multihulls without class specification nor measure restriction can join in: it is the “transantlantic regatta of freedom, from France to overseas France ”.
This rally has two different departure places (Caribbean and Florida); the fleets first meeting is in Bermuda (end of the 1st leg). Then, the boats follow to Horta (end of the 2nd leg), later doing an Azorean cruise to Angra and Ponta Delgada, depending on the weather conditions and the time they still have. From there, they leave to Lagos, where the rally finishes. The ARC Europe Rally happens annually since 1987. Depending on currents and winds, the boats will arrive at Açores in the end of May, beginning of June. Monohulls with a minimum of 27 feet and multihulls of 27 to 60 feet can join in.
The Azores and Back Race is an organization of the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club. It happens every 4 years, since 1975, binding Falmouth (England) to Ponta Delgada. It’s open to mono-hulls and multi-hulls, each one of these categories divided in boats with more and less than 40 feet.
GTA and RAS
The Grand Traversée de L'Atlantique happened for the first time in 2008, binding La Rochelle to Québec and making a stopover in Ponta Delgada in May. The second leg is called Retour Aux Sources and heads the reverse way, stopping at Ponta Delgada in August. This non competitive rally connects Europe to America and is open to mono-hulls between 10 and 18,5 metres and to multi-hulls between 12,5 and 18,5 metres.
